Despite continued efforts by member countries to implement the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), the damage caused by disasters has increased in recent years due to the global climate crisis and the increasing vulnerability of cities. In order to not only save human lives but also to ensure sustainable development of countries and regions, it is necessary to build a disaster resilient society through various systems and technologies. ADRC will organize its annual conference, Asian Conference on Disaster Reduction (ACDR) 2021 in December 2021 focusing on the following three themes.
- Building resilient societies to the intensifying climate crisis and increasing urban vulnerability
- Strengthening preparedness for disasters (disaster education, promotion of disaster volunteer activities, etc.), and
- DRR technology that match local needs to create safe, secure and livable society.
In relation to ACDR2021, a series of Online DRR Seminars are organized to build up the discussions on the three themes.
Second Seminar
Objectives
The discussions of the Second Seminar focus on “DRR education and awareness raising through passing down lessons of past disasters” to offer insights that contribute to governments and stakeholders’ efforts in implementing the SFDRR, especially Priority Four: Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
Specifically, it intends:
- To share experience of how Asian countries conduct DRR education and public awareness raising by passing down lessons from past disasters
- To seek effective methodologies for DRR education and public awareness to promote and encourage proactive actions during disasters including delivery of lessons learnt from the past disasters
- To enhance cooperation among Asian countries for further promoting DRR education and raising public awareness as a means of developing the ability to proactively protect themselves
- To introduce and reflect the result of this seminar in the Asian Conference on Disaster Reduction 2021 to be held in December 2021.
